7 THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN BARI
In this article we recommend the 7 things to do and see in Bari on the occasion of a weekend or a holiday with friends or family.
1- BARI VECCHIA AND STREET FOOD.
On the occasion of your stay in Bari, one of the things to do is the inevitable stroll through the alleys of old Bari (San Nicola district). The neighborhood is located between the two ports (the new and the old) closed to the east by the ancient walls. The medieval style takes you back in time and immerses you in a bygone era, but that, in these alleys full of folklore and ancient traditions, is more vivid than ever.
In the old town of Bari you will be able to enjoy the local street food: the sgagliozze, the popizze, the calzone of Bari, the panzerotti without forgetting the focaccia and the taralli.
Very famous are two historic bakeries: Panificio Fiore and Panificio Santa Rita.Click here to see the photos.
2- MARIA AND THE SGAGLIOZZE
Maria, is a lady, also reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, who made a bussiness out of tails.
What are the sgagliozze?
They are delicious strips of fried and salted polenta. In case you pass near the Cathedral, another of the things to do in Bari and stop by Signora Maria who is just there to taste this very famous local Street Food. I recommend you to go after 6pm, when the sun goes down; as per the tradition of the best local food trade.
To find it, just ask in the Piazza della Cattedrale of Signora Maria and everyone will know where to find you and then … Enjoy it!
3- THE WAY OF THE ORECCHIETTE: ARCO BASSO.
Another of the unmissable things to do in Bari is the walk along the Strada di Arco Basso.
In Bari, there is a whole street dedicated to orecchiette: Strada Arco Basso; here you will find Angela, Rosa, Nunzia and her daughter Francesca and many other ladies intent on the handmade production of the famous orecchiette.
The first three mentioned are our dear friends, if you pass them a greeting from Luciano apartment’s, they will treat you at the best!
Along the way you will come across wooden tables where housewives skillfully work flour and water to produce orecchiette, but not only: in fact they also make taralli, cavatelli and, during the Christmas holidays, you can taste the cartellate with vin cotto honey. You can buy all these products directly from the ladies.
You will also have the opportunity to experience the unique experience of enjoying artfully cooked orecchiette at Nunzia’s own home. Nunzia is one of the ladies of old Bari who will host you in her home and will prepare delicious dishes for you. Where to find it? Walking along Via di Arco Basso.
